No More Masking Symptoms

Posted In: Healthy Perspectives January 16, 2012

You know the drill: Sometimes we get carried away eating whatever, whenever and lounging around the house all day. Pretty soon, we'll start feeling lousy and go to the doctor, who prescribes medication to treat the symptoms of an ailment that never had to happen.

In these days of instant gratification, the medical establishment has trained us to pop a pill for every little thing that goes wrong. Can't sleep? Take a pill. Stomach hurts? Take a pill. High cholesterol? Take a pill.

This is NOT always the answer.

Yes, there is a place for medicine, and it does save lives! But we rely on it so heavily that we often use it to mask symptoms, rather than treating the root of the problem—which is usually ourselves.

Think about it: Eating heavy meals rich with grease and salt is not good for us. We all know this, yet we're all guilty of overindulging from time to time. And there's nothing wrong with that (as long as it's a treat rather than a habit)! But when a fatty meal leads to indigestion and you take an OTC pill that's filled with man-made chemicals, you're simply adding fuel to the fire.

The best way to avoid the "need" for unnecessary medicines that can harm your liver is just that—avoidance!

Quality Research

If you feed your body the nutrients it needs to function at peak performance, you won't have as many aches and tummy troubles. Prevention is key! Treat your body with respect, and you'll be surprised how much better you can feel—without the need for pill popping!

Just think—if you reduce the amount of medication you take, you reduce all those pesky—and sometimes downright nauseating—side effects that come along with it.

Don't forget about exercise! We've all heard it before—we have to watch less TV and move around more. It gets annoying listening to something we don't always want to hear, but it's repeated because it works. It's been proven in study after study that exercise can help relieve joint and back discomfort—on top of improving cardiovascular health and burning calories.

No amount of exercise is too small. If there's no time to go running, dance around as you vacuum your home. Do some jumping jacks in your living room when you have a few spare minutes. Walk your dog at a faster pace than usual. It all makes a difference to your overall wellness!

As a test, try this: Pick a day to skip the morning cereal. Instead, eat a bowl of low-fat yogurt with fresh fruit and granola. Record your afternoon TV shows and save them for a rainy day. Go for a walk or meet up with friends you've been meaning to catch up with. By the end of this day, you should be feeling pretty great!

So the next time your stomach hurts, set down the OTC painkillers and try natural methods such as ginger root, peppermint, HCl supplements, digestive enzymes, or probiotics. These natural substances soothe your body by giving it what it needs—treating the cause, not merely a symptom.
